Responsibilities:
· Provides strategic leadership for research and information services and products. Directs the ongoing operation of the RIC. Ensures that the RIC links both internal and external users with information and knowledge and adds value to this knowledge through customized analysis of user needs. Has overall responsibility for developing and monitoring the annual RIC budget (3 to 4 million dollars).
· Builds effective strategic relationships with clients and staff throughout the Association in order to anticipate information service needs that address critical AARP priorities, support the AARP strategic plan, and enable clients’ successful and timely decision making. Promotes RIC products and services to all staff and ensures training is provided to all those who need it. Serves as a recognized authority on research and information services, products, and procedures.
· Ensures the AgeLine program develops into a fully self-sustaining revenue generating program showing significant year over year increases in revenue. Assess, explores and aggressively pursues sales to educational institutions, media outlets, and online companies. Explores sales potential of services to AGN member organizations and other potential international markets.
· Directs the development and maintenance of innovative online solutions to disseminate, store, and communicate important content for the Association. Oversees Knowledge Management’s intranet presence and the presentation of the Association’s research products on AARP.org. Responsible for the departmental charge to post all AARP research reports on the Intranet and AARP.org, and for repurposing and republishing content in special purpose databases.
· Directs the RIC’s collection-development activities, moving the RIC from a print-based collection to a primarily digital collection and a self-service model.
· Has oversight responsibility for several databases produced in-house, particularly the royalty-generating AgeLine database, the largest bibliographic database focusing on the issues of those aged 50 years and older. Has oversight of all technologies used in developing and delivering content.
· Leads and manages the development of AARP’s corporate records management program, including the development of an AARP archive of historical materials that document the development of the organization. Collaborates with the Association’s Office of the General Counsel and with the office of the Chief Operating Officer to implement and maintain an effective records management program for the organization. Oversees the role of the RIC as the library-of-record and archive for AARP publications in whatever format.
· Manages, supervises, develops, mentors, motivates and leads RIC staff. Sets measurable performance goals and ensures that the AARP Strategic Plan is incorporated into individual performance plans, completes performance management processes; and meets with staff regarding performance on a regular basis. Recruits and retains high performing staff.
· Participates as a member of the Knowledge Management group leadership team, supports other management colleagues, supports knowledge sharing and best practices, and considers AARP strategic priorities in all activities and actions.
· Demonstrates WORLD CLASS cultural attributes and behaviors in all interactions.
Qualifications:
Completion of an advanced degree in library science, information sciences, business, or social/behavioral sciences. A minimum of 15 years of related experience required. Highly technical knowledge of information science methodologies, practices, processes and systems required. Other requirements: professional and managerial experience in progressively more responsible positions, with an emphasis on the information sciences and services; demonstrated experience and ability to direct large, complex and highly visible projects, and to manage knowledge workers in the information sciences and knowledge management domains; and experience in leading and managing change in an information services organization. Experience with strategic planning and organizational design, and familiarity with concepts and practices in knowledge management and records management are preferred.

Job Description Summary: This position will manage the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) grant. NDNP is a joint venture between the NEH and the Library of Congress (LC) to provide digital access to United States newspapers. This position will manage the day to day workflow and vendor interactions in order to digitize Arizona's newspapers according to grant technical specifications. This position will interact with Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records (ASLAPR) staff, grant partners, vendor, and Library of Congress in order to complete this project.
Responsibilities:
* Provide day-to-day general and technical project direction; manage workflow and vendor interactions
* Be the project liaison with the Library of Congress
* Be the project liaison with the grant partners (Northern Arizona University, University of Arizona, and the Arizona Historical Society) and coordinate the transfer of their microfilm to ASLAPR for second generation negatives and scanning. Also coordinate the return of the grant partners' silver negatives after the duplication, scanning and quality control have been completed.
* Be the liaison with the head of ASLAPR micrographic section to participate in microfilm evaluation and coordinate the scanning of microfilm and the transfer of scanned, raw images to the vendor
* Establish workflow and best practices for the project
* Develop and monitor tracking logs for newspapers included in the project
* Serve as the lead vendor contact and liaison with the vendor for zoning, keying, OCR database indexing and metadata
* Set up and monitor sampling mechanism for images ingested from vendor
* Select, train, schedule and supervise workers engaged in the quality control of images ingested into the agency
* Supervise quality control staff's review of images text and text-bound (i.e. PDF) products and associated metadata returned from the vendor to ensure that the product meets project specifications.
* Work with ASLAPR cataloging staff to make certain that holding records for Arizona newspapers are updated, including Union List records in OCLC and MARC holding records in local and state cataloging
* Collect and maintain statistics on production and prepare project reports as required.
* Develop public relations materials and provide outreach to other states and territories to encourage their application for NDNP grants, consultation on process and pitfalls, recommendations on best practices, equipment, and vendors
* Coordinate the delivery of materials (digital and microfilm) to the Library of Congress
Note: This position is not covered by the Arizona State Merit System Rules. This is a grant-funded position not to exceed eighteen months. Project can apply for an additional two year grant.
Desired Knowledge and Experience:
* MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA accredited program, or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.
* Knowledge of and experience with a wide range of digital formats, techniques, and equipment, as well as knowledge of standards for digital objects and metadata.
* Two or more years of pre- or post-professional supervisory experience.
* Ability to work effectively in a team environment with both technical and non-technical staff.
* Demonstrated project leadership skills.
* Flexibility in adapting to changing priorities.
* Knowledge of Dublin Core, XML, METS, MODS, and other digital content and metadata standards.
* Excellent attention to detail and the ability to exercise good judgment in implementing standards and rules.
* Strong analytical skills.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.

The Maynard Parker Fellowship at Newsweek
Newsweek magazine has created a one-year fellowship program as part of our overall effort to recruit and train talented journalists of diverse backgrounds. The 2008-2009 fellowship is open to researchers, librarians and information specialists who are pursuing a career in news media. A commitment to a career in electronic or print journalism or news research is essential. Applications for the September 2008 position should be received no later than Aug. 1, 2008. Applicants should be college graduates and/or have completed some journalism or library & information science graduate education. Professional library research, web development or journalism experience is highly desirable. Applicants must be prepared to spend a year working in the Research Center at the magazine. Finalists for this position will be invited to interview in person at the magazine’s headquarters in New York.
The 2008-2009 Fellowship winner will work in the Newsweek Research Center, a highly automated research library providing targeted research to Newsweek editorial staff worldwide. This position is under the direction of the Director of Library and Information Services. The Research Center is staffed with professional librarian/information specialists who perform electronic indexing and archiving, intranet website development and mission critical research on deadline for Newsweek magazine and Newsweek.com. This is an exceptional opportunity for a person entering or in the beginning stage of a career in news research with strong skills and a proven interest in working with computer technology and electronic information applications.
Fellowship candidates generally should expect to work at the magazine’s New York headquarters for the duration of their year.
