I don't think comparing a cotton field to a redwood
forest is correct. Just think of how many other
creatures live on, in and are associated with what
appears to be a forest dominated by one
tree specie. Think of all the epifytic plants, mosses,
lichens, molds, fungi, bacteria growing on the
trees. Think of all the insects, birds, mammals
and authropods living on the trees. Think of all the
soil organisms we cannot even see living on the
tree roots, and in the soil, decomposing the
plant residue and fostering the mineral cycle in
a redwood forest. A redwood forest is very bio-
diverse.

In a cotton field, however farmers deliberately create
a species-poor low biodiverse environment where only
one plant type lives. The soil is deplenished of soil
organisms due to repeated tillage operations and pesticides,
the insect life is largely killed off by pesticides and weeds
are killed by herbicides. The cotton field is begging
for chaotic conditions from pest attack due to low
biodiversity and is consequently unstable.

We tend to comment on what we can see redwoods or
cotton when there is a lot more there. We tend to see
the world as we are rather than as it is.
