Let me introduce myself as a new member. I am a Research Associate
at University of London's Wye College. I work in the Food Industry
Management Department and specialise in alternative marketing
systems.
This summer, I am planning to do a tour of US farmers' markets -
hopefully with a TV film crew - to promote the concept of farmers'
markets to a UK audience. I want to visit 10 certified farmers'
markets and I'm hoping that you can help me choose which ones
to go to. It seems to me, that each market I visit should be
distinctive and successful in its own right - so that I can create a
story as I go round. For example, are you aware of any of the
following:
- farmers' market run solely by women
- a market with an unusual range of speciality foods - or one that is
particularly attractive to chefs
- a successful market directed at a particular ethnic group - e.g. Amish, Mexican
- a market with an unusual/ or famous festival
- a market that survives, despite being in an inhospitable landscape
(urban or rural)
- the smallest certified farmers' market - with faithful followers?
- the largest US farmers' market - where is it and is it worth a visit?
- a market set up under unusual circumstances - e.g. by church groups
- a market that supplies a wide range of meat products
- a market (or several) that serve, or are run by, low-income/homeless/youth.....
and any other markets that are interesting and distinctive.
