GBlist: asbestos

These questions of asbestos removal reminds me: I have hear anecdotally
that there are different grades of asbestos out there. The type
generally found in residential applications (eg furnace duct lagging) is
not the same as was applied in heavy industrial situations. Furthermore,
the industrial type has been link very directly to lung cancer, but not
so in the residential.

This recollection of mine came out of some conversation long ago where
the person was saying that leaving residential asbestos alone was far
better than going through the laborious task of encapsulating or
removing it. He was countering the general frenzy that swept the country
about asbestos' toxicity.

I have seen mineral asbestos here in central California both in New
Idria and in Copperopolis and can attest that it comes in a diversity of
geological forms. Anybody shed some light on this?
