TT: Re: Introduction
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Folks -
I want to thank our recent 'newbies,' old-time foresters, civic
activists (great to hear from Lisa up in NYC), and others who are
introducing and reintroducing yourselves to the list.
As your humble and ever-fretting list administrator, I'm afraid to
confess that my own community forestry credentials are pretty pale
by comparison. Most of what I've learned about trees has come from
running this forum since US Arbor Day 1995. I got interested in the
subject planting street trees with my friend Gary Letteron in an inner-
city neighborhood of Baltimore a few years back. Colleague Gary has
since gone onto bigger things, organizing the yearly Octoberfest tree
plantings at various sites in town, and otherwise being recognized
regionally as one of our best independent urban foresters. Always
innovating new ways to beautify downtown without budget or political
backing. Coming up with unlikely solutions to 'urban blight' continues
to be one of the driving forces behind this work.
After a couple successful years of transplanting trees from develop-
ment sites and growing them in pots in front of peoples' houses, I told
Gary that I was determined to plant more trees on the Internet than I
ever could hope to on the street -- networking various forestry steward-
ship initiatives on-line. Thus Tree-House Discussion List was born,
later to be renamed to TreeTown for some vague reasons (which to date
nobody has complained about :) ...
My own background is in computers and in the visual arts (of which I
regard community forestry as being an integral part). I do not mind
at all being corrected by our better-knowing membership when I write
something that is not true to current ecological wisdom, thank you.
Please report often on the forestry work in your own commmunities --
be they urban or not, and take advantage of this new technology in
whatever ways that it can assist you in helping to make your own
home 'places more livable,' as Lisa puts it so well.
'We rant. We plant' ...
