Usenet Vs. NBA Draft

=== Usenet pick is the same as the NBA Pick

-N Usenet pick was "N"spots ahead of the NBA draft

+N Usenet pick was "N"spots after the NBA draft (a steal for the Usenet GM)

Pick Team Draft Player Diff
1 Houston Rockets Houston Rockets Usenet Caron Butler -9
NBA Ming Yao
Comments: Last year I was ready to name the worst first pick the "Peter Dodson" ceremonial screw up award, I've changed my mind and will now call it the "D.J. Foster" screw up award.  Way to go against every mock draft on the planet D.J (a true test of ones manhood IMHO).!  D.J. has also requested that I start doing a "look back" at previous drafts and pick a  "lets see if  the picks were really screw ups" award.  Hey, Barkley said they should pick Butler so D.J. is in good (maybe) company.
2 Chicago Bulls Chicago Bulls Usenet Jay Williams ===
NBA Jay Williams
Comments: Jay Moss looked at the best player in the draft and did not blink.  Taking Jay Williams, Mr. Moss proved he was just as smart as Jerry Krause.  Sorry for the insult Jay.
3 Goldent State Warriors Golden State Warriors Usenet Mike Dunleavy ===
NBA Mike Dunleavy
Comments: Steve Besselman sees a tall skinny white guy and says "why not".  Remember when taking a 6'9" white Duke player was a bad thing?  Ah, for the good old days.  Great pick by the Warriors
4 Memphis Grizzlies Memphis Grizzlies Usenet Ming Yao +3
NBA Drew Gooden
Comments: Curtis Hill usually hosts a NBA draft party here in the Chapel Hill area.  This year he had to go to Alaska, so someone else hosted it.  Curtis sent his girlfriend.  I have to tell you Curtis, it was really sad seeing Patty yell "My mans got a plus 3".  Really, really sad.  Curtis has worshiped Jerry West for years, this year he got to be Jerry West and outdid him.
5 Denver Nuggets Denver Nuggets Usenet Drew Gooden +1
NBA Nikoloz Tskitishvili
Comments: Good pick by Jeff Burgoyne.  Denver did a lot of housecleaning during this draft, which Jeff does over quite nicely in the post draft analysis section of his report.  I myself am waiting for one of these players to tell Kiki that they want to play in Dallas, not Denver.  I would just love that.
6 Cleveland Cavs Cleveland Cavs Usenet Maybyner Hilario -1
NBA Dajuan Wagner
Comments: John Popp has been the Cleveland Usenet GM for a few years.  After reading his 2002 report, I went back to reread his previous posts.  You should do this, there is a marked progression from upbeat optimism to utter despair.  Being a Cleveland fan must be a really, really hard life.  You have my condolences John .  On the plus side, Wagner's got good feet.  Hilario turned out to be a better pick then I first thought when John submitted it.  Good, if depressing, report.
7 New York Knicks New York Knicks Usenet Chris Wilcox -1
NBA Maybyner Hilario
Comments: New York fans are the best.  I wish they held the draft there every year.  New York traded Hilario to Denver and some guy who has played like 4 games in two years for some guy who has not played in over a year.  Bill Tarr did a fine job.  Well at least as good as Layden.  Hope the fans treat you better though.
8 L.A. Clippers Los Angeles Clippers Usenet Dajuan Wagner +2
NBA Chris Wilcox
Comments: Good pick by Robbie Bolton.  All nice things that I said last year about Elgin Baylor has been rescinded.  Lets see, have a great power forward, lets draft two more! Yippee.
9 Phoenix Suns Phoenix Suns Usenet Amare Stodemire ===
NBA Amare Stodemire
Comments: Wow! Great pick!  This is the second year in a row that the Usenet'ers have gotten the 9th pick exactly right.  I have to be honest, the only reason that I let Shawn Simpson into this draft was because my son's name is Sean Simpson.  Good karma I guess.  I read several things about Stodemire today, one site (the Sporting News I think) described his game as "clueless".  USA Today said that he was "very coachable".  So was he not very "coachable" when he was in High School and will now stop being "clueless"?  I'm just very confused.
10 Miami Heat Miami Heat Usenet Nikoloz Tskitishvili +5
NBA Caron Butler
Comments: Rob Clough (who was at our NBA Draft party last night), got very happy after Denver took Tskitishvili (giving him a +5 for the Usenet Draft).  After the 6th pick he started saying, "you know, Miami just might get Butler".  By the 9th pick Rob was downright giddy.  After the 10th pick he was insufferable.  Nobody should be this happy during an NBA Draft party!  Rob aspires to be a professional sports writer, please give his report a read.  It is far and away the best read of all the reports.  Great job Rob!
11 Washington Wizards Washington Wizards Usenet Qyntel Woods -10
NBA Jared Jeffries
Comments: The second big reach in the draft!  Peter Dodson gets nailed for the second year in a row.  Jefferies gained bulk and moved up in the draft.  I'm guessing steroids.
12 L.A. Clippers Los Angeles Clippers Usenet Curtis Borchardt -6
NBA Melvin Ely
Comments: Back to back bad picks for the Usenet'ers.  Rob dubbed Borchardt the BWSA (Best White Stiff Available).  Barkley had the best quote of night when, after the Clippers took Wilcox, he said, "either they picking him for someone else or they are stupid".  I love the Chuckster, this broke up the whole room at the party.  Could not have said anything better about the Clippers.  The interview of Baylor by Miller was very funny.
13 Milwaukee Bucks Milwaukee Bucks Usenet Jared Jeffries +2
NBA Marcus Haislip
Comments: Good pick by the Sub GM Bill Tarr.  Jeffries's stock went up closer to the draft.
14 Indiana Pacers Indiana Pacers Usenet Jiri Welsch -2
NBA Fred Jones
Comments: Much better pick by James Higgins IMHO then Mr. Walsh.  Jones was a big reach.
15 Houston Rockets Houston Rockets Usenet Marcus Haislip +2
NBA Bostjan Nachbar
Comments: A shot of redemption for D.J. Foster after the #1 fiasco.  I thought it would be another big  negative number with Haislip but D.J. proved me wrong.  He proved a lot more as a sub GM for the Atlanta Hawks.
16 Charlotte Hornets Philadelphia 76ers Usenet Bostjan Nachbar +1
NBA Jiri Welsch
Comments: Another great pick in a night of great picks for the Usenet GM's.  David Anderson also most got it right.  Welsch was traded to Golden State.
17 Charlotte Hornets New Orleans Hornets Usenet Chris Jefferies -10
Washington Wizards Washington Wizards NBA Juan Dixon
Comments: Jordan and the Wizards really bailed out the Usenet Nets.  A huge reach IMHO.  As was Jefferies at #17 for David Bene.
18 Orlando Magic Orlando Magic Usenet Dan Dickau -10
NBA Curtis Borchardt
Comments: Dickau was not a bad pick really.  I thought that he would go about this high.  No slam for Keith Mackert.  Borchardt (BSWA) was traded to Utah for Humphrey's.  Really Woods going to Portland and Borchardt going to Utah were the most logical picks of the night.
19 Utah Jazz Utah Jazz Usenet Melvin Ely +7
NBA Ryan Humphrey
Comments: Matt Welker was ecstatic when he picked Ely, who would have been better of in Utah then as the third string PF for the Clippers.  Humphrey was traded to Orlando for BSWA Borchardt.  Humphrey was a surprise pick and will never be more than a bench warmer in Orlando.
20 Toronto Raptors Toronto Raptors Usenet Kareem Rush ===
NBA Kareem Rush
Comments: Absolutely great pick by Jason Abel.  Had it not been for the Hawks at 30, this would have been the pick of the night.  Rush was traded to the Lakers for Chris Jefferies.
21 Portland Trailblazers Portland Trailblazers Usenet Frank Williams -4
NBA Qyntel Woods
Comments: decent late first round pick by Ed Ouellette.  Rob Clough (Miami) said trough out the night that Woods would go to Portland.  The perfect place for him.  When Barkley said that Portland had to many over the hill guys taking up to much cap space, I wonder who he meant?
22 Phoenix Suns Phoenix Suns Usenet Roger Mason -8
NBA Casey Jacobson
Comments: Shawn Simpson sent in his pick for 22 for Fred Jones, which was a "cringe pick".  A few minutes late he changed his mind to Mason (a non-cringe pick).  Lets see, -8 vs. a +8.  I should really cringe a lot less often.  Man don't you love those Stanford women.
23 Detroit Pistons Detroit Pistons Usenet Rod Grizzard -15
NBA Tayshaun Prince
Comments: Ian Allen make a big reach for Grizzard.
24 New Jersey Nets New Jersey Nets Usenet Juan Dixon +7
NBA Nenad Krstic
Comments: Another one of those "cringe picks" when it came in to being a whopping +7.  Way to go Mike Spiciarich, and thanks to Mr. Jordan on the huge reach of Randolph Childress, I mean Juan Dixon.  Kristic is the guy the idiot GM of the Kings should have picked
25 Denver Nuggets Denver Nuggets Usenet Tito Maddox -12
NBA Frank Williams
Comments: To many late nights with the kids for Jeff Burgoyne is the only way to explain this one.
26 San Antonio Spurs San Antonio Spurs Usenet Jamal Sampson -20
NBA John Salmons
Comments: Lets see, I averages 6 points and 6 rebounds a game.  I'm ready for the NBA.  Lets try for the IDBL and spot on ESPN's show with Maktar Njayia.  Really bad Usenet pick.
27 Loa Angeles Lakers Los Angeles Lakers Usenet Tayshaun Prince +4
NBA Chris Jefferies
Comments: Good pick by Jamie Resin!.  Jefferies was traded to Toronto for the rights to Kareem Rush.  This is a good thing because the Lakers surely need more talent.
28 Sacramento Kings Sacramento Kings Usenet Carlos Boozer -6
NBA Dan Dickau
Comments: I will do everything in my power to make sure that the GM who made this awful pick never ever gets to GM again.  -6 indeed!

Because of the Joe Smith affair, the Minnesota Timberwolves did not have a first round pick.  The NBA, for some reason, decided that they should count the pick anyway.  So the second round starts with the 30th pick, not the 29th.  For the purpose of this comparison, I use the NBA's position not the real one.  I'm doing this because last years Bucks GM keeps sending me email saying he should have an "exact pick " when he was off by one.  This year, no confusion.

30 Atlanta Hawks Atlanta Hawks Usenet Steve Logan ===
Golden State Warriors Golden State Warriors NBA Steve Logan
Comments: Wow!!!  The lowest exact pick ever in the Usenet Draft.  D.J. Foster wins two awards this year.  One bad and one great.  Way to go D.J.  Also, D.J. bailed me out by taking over Atlanta after their GM failed to show for his pick.  Logan should help Golden State's PG woes.  He is a little short but very quick.
31 Seattle Sonics Seattle Sonics Usenet Sam Clancy -14
Chicago Bulls Chicago Bulls NBA Roger Mason
Comments: You've got to feel for Sam Clancy.  Dislocating his kneecap while working out.  Had it not been for that, he would have been no lower then this.  Mason, on the other hand, should have stayed in school.
32 Boston Celtics Boston Celtics Usenet Luis Scola -24
Philadelphia 76ers Memphis Grizzlies NBA Robert Archibald
Comments: -24!.  The award for the biggest reach in the 2002 Usenet draft goes to Stan Novak and the Boston Celtics.
33 Minnesota Timberwolves Minnesota Timberwolves Usenet Dan Gadzuric -1
Denver Nuggets Denver Nuggets NBA Vincent Yarborugh
Comments: Oh so close.  Ryan Fortson as usual has written a top notch report.  The definitive Timberwolves analysis.
34 Dallas Mavericks Dallas Mavericks Usenet Vincent Yarborugh +1
Milwaukee Bucks Milwaukee Bucks NBA Dan Gadzuric
Comments: A great pick to end the draft by Chris Wait.  If only we could have flip-flopped the Wolves and Mavs picks we would have finished with style.
